Västra Hamnen, literally translated as the west harbor, sits just west of the city center, about 15–20 minutes walk from the central station. It used to be an industrial harbor and was redeveloped in the early 2000s into a high-end residential neighborhood area. Today it’s one of the most popular spots in Malmö for locals and visitors.

**What to see and do**

 &nbsp;

**1. Turning Torso**

• Turning Torso is the visual anchor of the area. So, if you are there, you have got to see it.
 &nbsp;


• 190 m tall, one of the tallest buildings in Scandinavia.
 &nbsp;


• You cannot go inside unless you live or work there.
 &nbsp;


• Best viewed from the waterfront paths.

 &nbsp;


**2. Waterfront walk**
 &nbsp;

• The long boardwalk by the sea is the main reason to visit.
 &nbsp;


• Flat and easy for walking or cycling
 &nbsp;


• Benches everywhere
 &nbsp;


• Sunset views over the Øresund bridge
 &nbsp;

This is where people swim, sit with coffee, or do nothing, which is the point.

**3. Sea swimming and bathing spots**

Västra Hamnen is known for sea bathing. So, there is a lot of these swimming piers that takes you directly in the deep area for some deep swimming.

 &nbsp;

 Food in Västra Hamnen is simple and well-executed. Most places focus on good coffee, light lunches, and relaxed meals by the water. You will also find a lot of great cafés and some nice ice cream spots by the water. Besides these, here are some great options for food around Västra Hämnen:

• Kontrast by the sea: Kontrast serves some of the best food in Malmö and their outdoor dining area is unmatched in a summer evening. You will be having some amazing Indian food with the sun setting on the water and Copenhagen on the other side. It doesn't get better than that. 

 &nbsp;

• Another amazing option is Porto Gastrobar. Porto blends European and Mediterranean influences and uses mainly locally sourced ingredients. Their offering ranges rom seafood and premium steaks to vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. However, if I were you, I would not skip their paella, one of the best, if not the best Malmö has to offer.

**Is Västra Hamnen worth visiting?**
 &nbsp;

**Yes, if:**

• You want a calm area by the sea
 &nbsp;


• You like modern architecture
 &nbsp;


• You are visiting in spring or summer

&nbsp;


**Less interesting if:**
 &nbsp;

• You want nightlife
&nbsp;

• You want museums or shopping
&nbsp;


• You are short on time and it’s bad weather

&nbsp;
